It is a known fact that SEO is essential for any website and there is no dearth of books, opinions, tutorials and what not, out there. And this problem of information overload can be really overwhelming.
I know there is a lot to be done, but where do I start ?
Here's a SEO beginner's checklist to optimize your posts – it is by no means, the end of your SEO journey, but it is a very very good start.
1. Identify Keywords & phrases
SEO Keywords & phrases are the keywords that help search engines locate your content when a user types in the related words or phrases in the search engine. Research for keywords related to your post.
Make sure you research the keywords related to your blog post. Also you could include longer phrases into your content. You can use free tools like Google Keyword Tool or the Wordtracker for keyword research.
2. Fix the URL structure
The first thing you need to do is fix your permalink structure for WordPress. Use the postname structure so your blog posts look like “https://yourwebsite.com/checklist-to-optimize-posts/”. Remember to keep the link short since only the first four words are relevant from the SEO point of view.
3. Set Image attributes used in the blog post
Google considers images of your blog post for ranking calculations. So try to use the keyword(s) for naming the image file used in your blog post. Also remember to use a alt tag & a title tag for your images which will add value to the optimization of your post.
4. Fix the post title
It is recommended to keep your post title short, preferably under 70 characters (including spaces). Include keywords into your title. Keep the title descriptive & relevant to the content of your post.
If you want to add more than one set of word in your title then use pipes (|) to separate them; don't use commas, underscores, hyphens, or any other special characters.
5. Broadcast your posts on your Social media profiles
It would never hurt to connect with potential customers & existing visitors of your website. For maximum web exposure you can broadcast your blog content on social media sites.
