The internet can be a scary place. There's malware, viruses, hackers, and plenty else you have to worry about. You need top-of-the-line protection software, of course. But there's always a chance that protection will fail. That's why you must make sure to back up your data as well.
BackupBuddy by iThemes is the perfect tool for this purpose. Now in its 8th version, this plugin is highly effective. If you're on a tight budget, though, it might not be the best fit for you. I'll go into more detail below.

After purchasing the plugin, you get 1GB of Stash storage for storing copies of your backups. With just a few clicks, you can backup your whole site, or select specific files to save.
Themes, plugins, media files, and all other pieces of content can be individually backed up according to your needs. You can also create custom backup profiles for backing up individual files in groups.
BackupBuddy also offers the Stash Live feature to all BackupBuddy users, which makes real-time WordPress backups and takes a substantial load off your server. The data is stored in the BackupBuddy Stash, where you can go to make a zip file and download the content as needed.
With a major performance boost in version 8.0, Stash Live can now handle bigger and more content-rich sites at the expense of very minimal resources. The backup is ongoing even while you are making changes to your website.
ImportBuddy is another important feature. It allows you to easily migrate your site to a new domain or host. The 8.0 upgrade improved the interface and the reset password feature, too. BackupBuddy also allows you to store your data offline by facilitating support for Amazon S3, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Rackspace Cloud Files.
The deployment feature has been improved as well. Before, when you were moving from a WordPress staging site to a live site, you wouldn't be able to see the files that were being transferred without actually running the program. Now, you can preview the files that are being transferred, and they're color-coded to let you know the order of file transfer.
BackupBuddy also comes with a free malware scan feature, email notifications for backup status, backup scheduler, backup profile feature, file migration, in-built server tools, database repair, sitemap, and much more.
There are a few things that this plugin lacks. One of them is its compatibility with GoDaddy servers. Due to this, you will always have to back up the files and database separately. Also, if your website is too old, BackupBuddy might just give up on it.
Another issue: if you're on a Windows Server, the plugin takes a good bit of time to go into compatibility mode, so the overall backup process is rather time-consuming. Moreover, there's no demo option available before purchasing the plugin, so you might be committing to something that doesn't really work for you.
Speaking of purchasing the plugin, let’s talk about the price. There are four packages, and the lowest price is $80, which gives you backup features for 2 sites. Similar plugins can give you the same service for about half the price.
If you have more than a couple sites you want to back up, though, BackupBuddy makes more financial sense. The Freelance package is $100 for 10 sites, and the Gold package is $199 for unlimited sites – these are much better deals.
The Last Word
Let’s face it: if you have one website, the price here is too steep. And if you're on a GoDaddy server, this isn't the right plugin for you, either. But beyond those two caveats, this is one of the best backup tools you'll find anywhere. We highly recommend it.
